The Pen is the Fountain of Inspiration

My desk is full of strange, yet beautiful, objects. Opinel knives, a broken old Honeywell thermostat, Legos, and different kinds of notepads.

A constant interaction with thoughtful, beautifully designed products can inspire our creativity in the most unexpected ways. Surrounding myself with these timeless designs serves as training for my senses.

One “everyday product” in my collection has proven to be especially useful as a source of inspiration. It’s my fountain pen — the Vanishing Point by Pilot, which has a beautiful matte black finish.

I spent quite a lot of time searching for a fountain pen that had outstanding quality and a truly minimalistic design. The moment I saw Pilot’s Vanishing Point pen, I knew I’d found what I was looking for.

A simple, elegant form with precise finish. An innovative retractable, ballpen-like, mechanism that turns this alluring fountain pen into something amazingly useful.

How does such a simple product inspire a complex digital design?

It’s the striving for simplicity. A focus on quality and product innovation in a market where nothing change for ages… that’s something that designers should always keep in mind. That idea is what certainly connects this unique fountain pen and the UXPin redesign that I’ve been recently working on.
